Groups Battle Over Freedom To Fish Act

Wi Fi Radio Environmental and fishing-advocacy groups, sometimes partners in battles to preserve fish stocks, are battling each other in the Statehouse over something called the Freedom to Fish Act.

The Freedom to Fish Act was opposed at the Senate hearing by various environmental groups, such as The Ocean Conservancy and Environmental Defense, which would prefer to take the easy way out and ban all fishing over broad areas rather than have to scientifically prove its case for doing so. The group claims recreational fishing organizations are trying to take MPAs out of the fishery management "toolbox, " but the Freedom to Fish Act simply requires proof before any action is taken.

Broadband Access The bill is being pushed by the New Jersey-based Recreational Fishing Alliance as a way to prevent the closing of potentially large portions of waters within the state's 3-mile limit to recreational fishing.

3 Mobile has now expanded its list of services to include broadband offered through the freedom of a dongle. Mobile broadband allows users to access the internet anywhere at any time without having to be in range of a wireless hub or hotspot. The 3 Mobile broadband packages have proven so popular that the company briefly ran out of stock.

Broadband Connection Alliance members contend there is no scientific evidence to show that MPAs work. They contend fish stocks and habitat can be safeguarded by better enforcement of existing regulations on things such as catch quotas or fishing seasons, or by adjusting those quotas and seasons as necessary.

Palm Wi Fi Card Environmental groups say the methods favored by the alliance don't work when it comes to protecting fish stocks.

Broadband For Business David Guggenheim, vice president for conservation policy with Ocean Conservancy, claims the requirement to producing scientific fact would be nearly impossible to meet. That's in part because, without MPAs, there are no "scientific reference points so we really understand how the marine communities are in the absence of human impact," he said.

Belkin Fi Phone Wi Neither side is bashful in its attack on the other.

Insight Broadband Alliance Executive Director James Donofrio accuses the environmental groups of wanting to eventually ban recreastional fishing altogether and create "maritime petting zoos."

Wi Fi Toy Guggenheim accuses the alliance of "blanketing the public with misinformation."

Wi Fi Hot Spot "I'm a fisherman. My love of the ocean came from being a fisherman. Many of my colleagues are fishermen. We are not anti-fishing."

Atlantic Broadband The alliance is pushing similar bills in several other states, including California, where fishing-advocate groups say the creation of MPAs has hurt the recreational fishing industry. The alliance wants New Jersey to be the first state to adopt a Freedom to Fish Act.
